Here is a sample itinerary for three-day pre-Philmont New Mexico tour. It is essentially the one used on our
2001 Yankee Clipper Council Philmont expedition. I have made a few
minor adjustments to reflect actual or suggested times based
on our experience.Friday June 2912:39 PM - Arrive Albuquerque Airport (Sunport)1:09 PM - Bus to UNM by Herrera Coaches 1:30 PM - Check in UNM dorm 2:15 PM - Walk to Maxwell Museum of Anthropology (Note: National Atomic Museum would be the convenient alternative if you stay at Kirtland AFB) 2:30 PM - Visit Anthropology Museum (Note: I have adjusted this time to 1 hour) 3:30 PM - Assemble at museum entrance 3:40 PM - Student-guided tour of UNM Campus 5:15 PM - Dinner in Dorm Cafeteria 6:30 PM - Free time 8:00 PM - Expedition/Crew meetings 9:00 PM - Free time 10:00 PM - Lights Out Saturday June 306:30 AM - Reveille & wash up7:00 AM - Breakfast 8:30 AM - Assemble and load bus 9:00 AM - Travel to Start of La Luz Trail (Note: the Sandia Crest Nature Trail would be an alternative here requiring a little more travel time) 9:45 AM - Begin hike into foothills 10:50 AM - Hike back to Bus 11:35 AM - Reboard Van 11:45 AM - Travel to Albuquerque 12:15 PM - Lunch at Blake's Lota Burger at Carlisle Exit I-40 1:00 PM - Travel to Pueblo Center (IPCC) 1:20 PM - Arrive IPCC, visit gift shop 2:00 PM - See Dances 2:40 PM - visit Museum 3:45 PM - Load bus 3:55 PM - Travel to Old Town Albuquerque 4:15 PM - Visit Old Town Plaza and shops 5:15 PM - Roman Catholic Scouts meet at North side of Plaza 5:30 PM - Mass at Church of San Felipe de Neri (Roman Catholics) 6:00 PM - Meet in Plaza (non Mass group) 6:15 PM - Walk to restaurant (followed by Catholic group after Mass) 6:30 PM - Dinner at Maria Teresa Restaurant (Note: Little Anita's in Old Town would be just as convenient and somewhat less expensive. El Pinto or Sadie's would be a short drive.) 8:00 PM - Load bus 8:10 PM - Travel to UNM 8:30 PM - Free Time 9:55 PM - Lights out / quiet hours Sunday July 15:45 AM - Reveille & wash up6:00 AM - Breakfast 7:30 AM - Pack up & check out 8:00 AM - Assemble & Load Bus 8:15 AM - Travel to Santa Fe 9:30 AM - See Santa Fe Plaza, shops, museums, & sights 11:00 AM - Load Van 11:05 AM - Travel to Los Alamos 12:00 PM - Lunch - McDonalds 12:40 PM - Travel to Science Museum 12:55 PM - Visit Bradbury Science Museum 1:00 PM - Pick up food at Smith's Supermarket (while Scouts are in museum) 2:30 PM - Load Bus at Museum 2:45 PM - Travel to Bandelier National Monument Visitor Center 3:05 PM - Visitor center for movie 3:40 PM - Tour ruins, starting with guide 5:05 PM - Load bus 5:10 PM - Travel to Ponderosa Group Campsite 5:35 PM - Set up camp 6:35 PM - Picnic Supper 7:15 PM - Free time or walk to canyon 8:00 PM - Return to Camp 8:45 PM - Campfire or quiet time 9:35 PM - Taps Monday July 25:00 AM - Reveille & wash up5:15 AM - Breakfast 5:45 AM - Break camp 6:00 AM - Load Bus 6:10 AM - Travel to Taos 7:45 AM - See Rio Grande Gorge Bridge 8:10 AM - Travel to Taos Pueblo 8:30 AM - Visit Taos Pueblo- guided tour 9:50 AM - Load bus 10:00 AM - Travel to Philmont 11:50 AM - Arrive Philmont July 2 -13Philmont Trek: 12 days of fun and adventureSaturday July 145:00 AM - Reveille at Philmont Base Camp5:00 AM - Pack up 5:45 AM - Early Continental Breakfast 6:15 AM - Load Bus 6:30 AM - Travel to Las Vegas, NM (note: This Las Vegas stop could be replaced by a stop at either the Pecos or Fort Union National Monuments) 8:30 AM - Snack stop at McDonald's Las Vegas 9:10 AM - Load Bus 9:15 AM - Travel to Las Vegas Plaza 9:25 AM - Stop for short walk around Plaza 9:30 AM - Load Bus 10:00 AM - Travel to Albuquerque Airport 11:55 AM - Check in, lunch, and board 1:26 PM - Board Plane for return |
